What Does Puff Puff Mean?
Puff puff is a traditional African snack made with all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, salt, onion, fresh pepper, warm milk, etc.
The Southern and Eastern edges of West Africa eat this amazing snack very well. (Over there this snack is known as mandazi).
Here We Have Two Different Puff-Puff Recipes.
Preparing a Puff Puff, we consider Ingredients as the major factor as to how the Snack will taste after frying. We have grouped this into two methods. They are:
- Puff puff without fresh pepper.
- Puff puff with fresh pepper.
Puff puff without fresh pepper.
This method is quite simple as anybody can do this. We have listed out basic ingredients to produce it.
Here Are The Ingredients Needed.
- All purpose flour.
- Yeast
- Sugar
- Nutmeg
- Baking powder (optional)
How To Make Puff With Baking Powder.
- sift in the flour so that if there is any lumps or anything in the flour the sieve will definitely catch it up.
- Add your gold star instant yeast if using this particular one. You don’t need to soak in the water before using it. the baking powder then, stir together.
- Add your choice baking pasta sugar very important because, it doesn’t have this hardness of the normal granulated sugar.
- Put nutmeg to it then, mix the dried ingredients together so that everything will be incorporated.
- Add a cup of warm water to it then, mix gradually till done.Use a foil paper and cover the mixture first before you cover it again with towel or napkin.
- Put it in a warm place (Oven) not hot please then, live it for about 45 minutes. By that time, everything would have risen.
- Then scoop the Snacks and put in your hot oil and allow to fry, turn it over and fry the other side as well then, scoop out the Snacks and allow it drain.
Puff-Puff Main Ingredients
- 4 cups of all purpose flour.
- 1 table spoon of yeast.
- 1/2 cup of sugar.
- 1 table spoon of salt.
- Onion.
- Fresh pepper.
- 1 cup of warm milk.
- 1 cup of warm water.
- Vegetable oil for deep frying.
Puff-Puff With Milk
- First thing you have to do is to add your yeast in a bowl, add your sugar then, go ahead and add the warm water. If the water is hot is going to kill the yeast and if the water is cold the yeast will not rise so, be careful.
- Then, go ahead and mix it very well then, set aside and live the yeast to proof for 9-10 minutes. Peal and wash the onion properly grind and set aside.
- Wash the pepper very well for at least 2-3 times, chop and and put in a bowl, cover and keep.
Puff-Puff Easy Preparation.
- Seive the flour, add sugar go ahead and mix together till done.
- Pour in the yeast now. the warm milk, chopped onion then mix.
- Add the water gradually till you get it right.
- Put the diced pepper. If you want hot pepper fee free to use hot pepper, but if you don’t want it hot make use of sweet red pepper.
Puff-Puff With Pepper
- wrap the mixture with foil and your kitchen clean napkin and allow it on the kitchen table for about 45-50 minutes.
- Put you oil on your cooking stove, allow it to get hot.
- Stir the mixture again, then scoop with a deep spoon. Feel free to use your hand and do likewise then, fry with medium heat and as well don’t forget to flip the Snacks continuously till done.
- Your delicious puff puff is ready then, serve with any drink of your choice.

How To Preserve Puff Puff
Store it in the freezer. The Snacks will not lose its taste for up to 2 weeks if it is frozen. When you want to eat it, bring it out and leave it to defrost at room temperature. Then warm in a microwave for a very short time for at least 15 – 20 secs.
How To Make Puff Puff Round.
- By using a deep soup spoon to scoop and by putting it the same direction till you get a round shape.
- Use your hand as well.
Why Does My Snacks Not Risen.
- Low heat
- Not keeping in a warm place before frying.
- After mixing the whole ingredients, not covering the mixture in order to undergo the due process.
- If you don’t allowing the yeast to sit for at least 10 minutes.
Why Is My Puff Puff Soaking Oil?
- Just because, you didn’t allow your oil to heat very well. Both in frying Akara, buns, chim chim, doughnuts, etc. Make sure that your oil gets hot (after that, If possible reduce the heat before frying) instead of frying with normal hot oil. It will surely soak oil and you will not enjoy eating the snacks.
- Secondly, Buy and use good oil. It normally helps and as well give your snacks a very good and awesome taste.
