Sweet Tomatoes Could Finally Reopen This Month—Here’s What To Know

The closure of all Sweet Tomatoes restaurants in 2020 left devoted fans utterly heartbroken. However, there’s fantastic news for those still mourning the loss – Sweet Tomatoes is poised to make a triumphant return in just a few weeks.

Indeed, according to Restaurant Business Magazine, a Sweet Tomatoes location in Tucson, Arizona, is slated to reopen its doors in late February or early March. While news of the chain’s revival first surfaced in March 2023, this update provides the first concrete timeline for the eagerly awaited reopening. This grand comeback marks nearly four years since the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to Sweet Tomatoes’ business, leading to bankruptcy and the closure of all 97 restaurants.

According to Sweet Tomatoes COO Mike Malone, none of the previous leadership is involved in the reopening plans. Instead, the resurgence of the beloved buffet chain is being spearheaded by former customers who are passionate supporters of the brand, Malone revealed to Restaurant Business Magazine. The identities of the new owners remain undisclosed.

Formerly known as Souplantation in California, Sweet Tomatoes gained renown for its fresh salad bar and extensive buffet offerings, including soups, pizza, and bread.

The forthcoming reopening of the Tucson location, situated at 6202 East Broadway Blvd., holds particular significance. Originally established in 1996, Malone affirmed that it remains a strong establishment within an excellent market. He expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re thrilled to make our return.”

The interior of the restaurant is undergoing a makeover, featuring fresh colors and a revamped appearance. However, loyal Sweet Tomatoes enthusiasts will rejoice knowing that many beloved menu items and cherished recipes will make a return at the Tucson location when it reopens.

Among these cherished favorites are the iconic Joan’s Broccoli Madness salad, hearty chicken noodle soup, classic Caesar salad, indulgent soft serve, and the signature strawberry lemonade that patrons have come to adore. Malone assured that the salad bar, the heart of the restaurant, will continue to offer the same array of fresh-cut ingredients that have delighted fans in the past.

“We’re bringing back all the favorites. Our goal is to open with the familiar,” Malone emphasized.

Maintaining its tradition, the reopened restaurant will adhere to the all-you-can-eat format at a fixed price, although the exact pricing is yet to be determined. Malone emphasized the operators’ commitment to providing exceptional value for customers.

Although the initial reopening is limited to the Tucson location, Malone hinted at potential expansion into additional markets in the future. The brand may also explore the possibility of incorporating delivery services, a consideration that predates the pandemic but had not been realized, as reported by Restaurant Business Magazine.

Sweet Tomatoes is not the sole cherished brand making a return this year. Steak and Ale, a nostalgic steakhouse chain that ceased operations and closed all locations in 2008, is set to unveil a new restaurant in Minnesota come April.

The franchisee behind the Minnesota Steak and Ale venture has secured a significant deal encompassing 15 locations in the Midwest and holds exclusive rights to expand the concept across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.
